Education secretaries, principals tasked on implementation of UBE

PAST and serving education secretaries in Delta State have been  charged to use their position and experience to ensure the effective  implementation of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) as established by  the law. The charge was given by a former education secretary in Ethiope West  Local Government Area of Delta State, Dr Henry Ofa, at a meeting of  education secretaries held in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State. Dr Ofa noted that education at the primary and junior  secondary levels is very crucial for the development of the child and  that it is necessary that all stakeholders should be involved if the  programme is to achieve the desired results. NUC accreditation has kept academic programmes competitive —AAUA VC

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has been commended for its regular efforts at accrediting academic programmes in Nigerian  Universities and for helping to ensure standardisation of academic  training and knowledge impartation. This commendation was given last week by the Vice Chancellor of  Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Igbekele  Ajibefun, while playing host to the NUC accreditation teams who visited  the University for a review and accreditation of various academic  programmes. Prof. Ajibefun, who was represented by the Deputy Vice  Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Olugbenga Ige, said accreditation and review of academic programmes are some of the best innovations of the  National Universities Commission for which it should continually be  applauded. ASUU strike: BUK lecturers join action, give reasons

More universities have continued to join the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, with the latest being Bayero University, Kano, BUK. The BUK chapter of ASUU joined the ongoing industrial action on Wednesday. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Kano, the ASUU BUK branch Chairman, Ibrahim Barde said the industrial action which started around 2pm on Wednesday, would continue indefinitely until all the demands of the union were met. He disclosed that the decision to go on strike was due to the failure of the Federal Government to implement some of the agreements it signed with the union since 2009. According to Barde, “We have commenced the indefinite strike as directed by the national body of ASUU.” “We have also decided to go on the strike because the government did not also meet our demands on the Memorandum of Action signed between the two parties.”
